EVIL CONDUCT

Buddha (2)
Move towards good. Cease from evil.
Evil takes over when good is neglected.

One evil is enough-why repeat it?
Only grief will follow if the mind thinks evil.

One good is a beginning which needs repetition.
Only joy will follow if the mind thinks good.

Happy is the sinner till evil ripens.
When evil ripens, he comes to grief.

Sad is the good man till good deeds ripen.
When good deeds ripen, joy surrounds him.

Some think lightly, “Evil won’t touch me”.
Evils fill a fool as drops fill a waterpot.

Some think lightly, “Virtures won’t affect me”.
Little drops fill a waterpot.
Little virtures make a wise man.

A rich and lonely trader avoids lonely dark roads.
A man in love with life avoids poison.
A wise man avoids evil deeds.

A finger without a wound touches poison,
and poison cannot harm it.
Evil cannot harm one who is not evil.

Like dust flung in the wind
which the wind flings back,
evil recoils on the fool
who harms the innocent.

The good go to heaven, the sinners to hell,
some are born again, and some find Nirvana.

Where in the world can a man escape
the evil results of his evil deeds?
Not in the sky, not in the ocean,
not in the deep valleys of mighty mountains.

Where can a man escape death?
Not in the sky, not in the ocean,
Not in the deep valleys of mighty mountains.

  1. Like the meditation of these posts. Tonight it is the line describing how evil can fill a fool and comparison with contact of water. Many of these words resonate with Aboriginal/Traditional Indigenous Teachings about good/evil and behaviour. How sadly we learn one cannot taste just a little bit of evil? We are taught the Creator is merciful when we amend our ways. Peace be with you Eddie.

  2. Hello Eddie,I’ve read everything on your space. You appear to be quite knowledgeable. Please share more with your online friends. Evil will always come our way, but our response makes the difference to the outcome. All of our actions are choices we make. In making a choice, we also reject something else. God bless and enjoy this day. Jeanne

  3. This is a very important post. When we are striving to live a pure, good life one act of ‘evil’ or doing something we know deep down is not right can set us back and bring us grief. I read this piece with interest. Thank you, Jen

  4. Thank you for a lovely evening meditation. Yes, why repeat an evil? These are very wise, calming words of life instruction you post. Thank you.
