Heavy Load

IMG_0692

I have carried a heavy load on my back ever since I was a boy.

I realized then that we could not hold our own with the white men.

We were like deer. They were like grizzly bears. We had a small

country. Their country was large. We were contented to let things

remain as the Great Spirit Chief made them. They were not, and

would change the rivers and mountains if they did not suit them.

  1. Regarding your reply to my comment: I’m duly chastised. Thank you for putting me back on track on the road of not belittling or degrading even an offender. I’m seldom on top of my outrage.

  2. The Words of Chief Joseph were wise ones….It is my belief that everything is a circle and one day the circle will fall back upon its self…. And when that day dawns maybe our ancestors will see that to be the Deer was the best way…

We can only go forward with love in our hearts and Hope for tomorrow…

    Lovely post Eddie

  3. ” … they were like grizzly bears ..” I’m inclined to not compare white (men) to any kind of animal.

    • Symbolism is extensively used in many forms of poetry and quite common.
Native people of America saw strangers in their homeland becoming
offensive to everything they hold sacred. And they could do nothing about it.

      • Yes, I understand. I meant that the animals, even grizzly bears, are better than the white people who behaved offensively in America and just about everywhere else they went. I’m in South Africa. Do I need to explain our history? I would imagine a better metaphor would be something of a ‘lower’ life form, like leeches, or cut worms, or ogres or …

      • no harm here
they were just comparing size and strength of these animals
they never intend to degrade or belittle
        they always show respect
thank you very much for returning with this information.

  4. i watch the movie Dances with wolves several times.
and every time again i cant understand why so called civolised ppl can do such things
the words of chief Joseph are more than true. Its the value of respect/

  5. I feel man whatever race, color or creed has made other men, environment, or animals subserviants to their twisted views. It saddens me. I love the photograph above. I worked and did physical therapy with turtles like that for my internship at the wildlife center. Very interesting creatures. And quite unique.
