If I Had a Second Chance

If I had my life to live over again,
I would have made a rule to read some
poetry and listen to some music
at least once every week.

  1. |Poetry and music; one cannot go wrong with that statement! It would be nice to read Darwin’s autobiography; note to self: check the Gutenberg site!

A 90-something year old lady once said to me, “If I could live my life over again, the one thing I would do would be to visit the elderly more often.” She was legally blind, and I was illustrating a few of her projects, and we became good friends. Her words touched me deeply, and affected my empathy for the elderly. 30 years later her words still echo as if she stated them just today.

    • There are certain people who have that effect on ust. The fact that you met her, became acquainted and shared life
helped shape who you are today.
      What an inspiring day!

      • She definitely played a role in shaping my life – and attitudes about life. One more – which I think I’ve shared – was a ‘judge’ at a 4H-livestock show, after my calf pulled me around the arena in a showmanship class. Shocked to receive ‘Best in Show’ – I then realized why when the judge whispered, ‘Honey, don’t you EVER lose that smile.’ The 1,000-pound ‘calf’ was barely shorter than I, — and the smile was for my mother’s behalf, who thought ‘we’ were not ready for that show. Oh yes, life does smile on us in subtle ways – now 50+ years later I still benefit from a 10-second encounter!

  2. The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature (Darwin). Like all else, the life of the mind also comes with costs. Perhaps the biggest cost is, as Darwin puts it, the enfeebling of emotions. It’s humbling to learn that even one of the world’s foremost emotion scholars worried about his own emotional development
